But like the doorway predicament described by Don Norman in The Design of Everyday Things, sometimes you can become stuck when trying to find the right EHS&S software solution. In the book, the author tells the story of a friend getting trapped in a doorway. How? It was no standard swinging door, rather, a row of six swinging glass doors designed to reduce airflow and maintain the indoor temperature of the building. When his friend pushed one of the outer doors, he entered, but couldn’t push open the next door. The doors had no visible hinges or handles, so he was unaware which side to push and panicked. The doors were not useful or practical even if they looked shiny and appealing, a predicament that is similar to how EHS&S leaders might feel when selecting a software solution.
The NAEM EHS and Sustainability software conference this year offered a way through all “six doors” by offering practical, yet appealing solutions. Here are 3 takeaways from this year’s conference that might be helpful as you select the right EHS&S software solution for your operation/enterprise:
- Choose Customer Care. With so many vendors, it can be difficult to find the right provider. Most vendors concentrate on selling you a product. But customer care should be the core focus because your current and ongoing needs are more important – a product should be built around you! Customer satisfaction drives Gensuite innovation and service, as reflected in a recent NAEM EHS and Sustainability software ratings report. We received more consumer reviews than any other participant and a customer service rating of 92% (the percentage of respondents satisfied with Gensuite’s customer service) along with top marks in other critical areas, such as speed of EHS&S software implementation. - Emerging Technology for Employee Engagement. During the conference, I had the opportunity to present with Tanya Messinger from GE on the impact of emerging technologies such as Wearables, Beacons, Virtual Assistants and Augmented Reality. We’re experiencing the transition from pie-in-the-sky concepts to practical applications on the shop floor, with measurable value across productivity, employee engagement, and the safety performance of our operations. It’s exciting to be a part of the Gensuite community where the push for innovation and continuous improvement is heavy in these areas. When aligned with employee engagement in particular, we begin to see better strategies for engaging employees with HSE and in turn compliance objectives are more readily met.
- Implement, Integrate and Optimize. Post NAEM is an opportunity to digest and consider if the providers you discovered could fit into your EHS&S programs seamlessly, integrate with any existing software or programs and be optimized down the line. At Gensuite, we can deploy to your site in as little as 2-4 weeks and typically you are in deployment across the enterprise within one quarter. We also offer a full spectrum of compliance and management systems from EHS and Sustainability to Quality, Product Stewardship, Responsible Sourcing and Security. All our applications are fully configurable to suit your business process needs. You can demo or register for a free trial to see if Gensuite is a right fit for you.
So, if you find yourself stuck in a series of swinging glass doors, consider the above three tips to make your transition to an EHS and Sustainability software system seamless. Find a provider that places their core focus on customer care, ensure they are looking toward emerging technology and employee engagement, and can integrate and optimize to your needs. In doing so, you’ll reach your EHS&S program destination with success.
