Gensuite Announces Enhanced GHS Capabilities in SDS System

Hazmat, chemical operations, chemical management, SDS, MSDS

CINCINNATI, Ohio – With the passing of U.S. OSHA’s June 2015 deadline for reclassification of chemicals and associated updates to Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and labeling by manufacturers, U.S. employers are now working to ensure full compliance with GHS by the June 1, 2016 deadline.

In anticipation of these deadlines and compliance requirements, Gensuite embarked on an 18-month effort to enhance its SDS System to support business and facility needs. The Gensuite SDS System now offers enhanced GHS-centric employee hazard communication and chemical management capabilities. Subscribers can intuitively search and easily access SDS’s in the Gensuite tool on desktop & mobile. The tool features container and shipping label generation (with QR codes), integrated regulatory reporting & analytics, and intelligent systems integration with IH, safety & environmental Gensuite applications.

Now with enhanced GHS capabilities, the Gensuite SDS System includes hazard and transportation pictograms, hazardous and precautionary statements for priority regions (e.g., EU, U.S., Australia), and provides a consistent format for the 190,000 SDS’s in Gensuite’s repository. Facility employees are able to access GHS-related hazard information “on the shop floor” and via mobile in real time.

More on GHS …
GHS defines and classifies the hazards of chemical products, and communicates health and safety information on labels and safety data sheets. This standard provides a single set of criteria for classifying chemicals according to their health and physical hazards and specifies hazard communication elements for labeling and safety data sheets.

This harmonization of standards is expected to prevent over 500 workplace injuries and illnesses and 43 fatalities in the U.S. annually. GHS will:
• Improve the quality and consistency of hazard information in the workplace,
• Enhance worker comprehension of hazards, reduce confusion in the workplace, facilitate safety training, and result in safer handling and use of chemicals,
• Provide workers quicker and more efficient access to information on the safety data sheets, and
• Reduce trade barriers by harmonizing with systems around the world.

GHS is being implemented throughout the world, including U.S., Canada, the European Union, China, Australia, and Japan.
