Find an Innovative Career Path – A Q&A with the Growing Gensuite Team

Recently, I had a chance to sit down with, Alexis Santel (Lead Specialist, New Business Development) and Jenny Yu (Leader, Strategic Development and Innovation), to learn more about our global, diverse and cross-functional teams.

Describe a typical day in your roles.

Alexis: I’m a Lead Specialist on the New Subscriber Development team. My day consists of working with new prospective subscribers who are looking for a solution to implement. Frequently, I’m attending or performing demos for prospective customers, so they can see how our software functions and how it can meet their program expectations. I’m also working on cost estimates and preparing them for the customer services team. I’m working with the customer through their entire journey of starting at Gensuite.

Jenny: I work in the Business Strategy and Innovation Pillar, under Donavan Hornsby, Gensuite VP & Strategic Business Development Executive. My role is focused on new technologies, as an extension onto our current software. By managing these new technology initiatives, I work closely with the Product Management team to create prototypes, and our marketing team to promote our solutions. For me, it’s great to see our user base interest grow.

How did you join the Gensuite Team?

Alexis: I was actually on maternity leave and searching for a new job. I found the listing on Indeed.com, this was before the new website was redone, so I didn’t really understand what Gensuite offered at first. But I’m glad I took that chance because I wouldn’t be where I am today. I feel like I have a career now, and not just a job.

Jenny: In 2009, I graduated from college and was looking for a job. I started working for the EHS team at GE. Gensuite was still apart of GE at the time. Then, Gensuite spun off and I went with them, we moved out and expanded our team.

Describe your favorite project or initiatives you’ve worked on at Gensuite.

Alexis: My work is usually not project based. Recently, I’ve worked on a project involving a large American automotive and energy company that specializes in electric car manufacturing. This project has been a big deal and very interesting to me. It’s also been extensive. Mansa, my lead manager, has put in a majority of the work, but my takeaway has been a huge learning experience because I’ve seen every piece of the process. With the deal now signed, it’s very rewarding and worth celebrating. I’ve also had the chance to visit some very cool places with that project too.

Jenny:  I have two favorite projects. The first one would be the GennyTM product launch. For Genny, we wanted to create a proof of concept first. It’s been a ‘WOW’ factor, as we showcased the first EHS Virtual Assistant to our customers. It’s a very interesting project, because there is much room for growth and creative ideas. The other project is one we custom made for a customer, involving our Chemical Manager Application. We created this application from scratch based on the customer requirements. It was very technical, especially understanding the background and needs of the customer. But in the end, we received very good feedback.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Alexis: I’d like to become a Director within the organization. I still have a lot to learn.  Over the course of the next 5 years, hopefully, I’d have the expertise and knowledge to step into that role and handle major accounts solo, through all the stages. I’m looking forward to that challenge.

Jenny: I like my current role. In the future, I see myself as a Product Director. I look forward to expanding the Frontier Tech initiatives, with a team. I see us, having more partnerships with those technologies.

What makes Gensuite a stand-out company to work for?

Alexis: If you’re looking for a job in the tech industry, you should apply at Gensuite. It’s very interesting being a part of a leading technology company. Also, what makes working here worthwhile is the people. This company is a team. We have 300+ employees all across the world, and we are always able to stay connected and keep projects going. On a daily basis, I’m not just working with the NSD team, I’m working cross-functionally with the customer services and development team, marketing, and BDSI. Everything we do is a team effort. And I love this team.

Gensuite is challenging, working here isn’t a fluff job. Each day is different, and that’s really important. What I like most, is that Gensuite really gives people the opportunity to prove themselves and be rewarded for their hard work.

Jenny: The other day I saw a quote from  Jack Mac, co-founder of Alibaba – he said, that between the age of 25 to 35 you should not work at a Fortune 500 company because that will fix you to a role. It can limit your growth and train you to follow the process instead of using your creativity to learn from different aspects. He recommended that young people searching for employment should look for growing smaller sized companies so that you have more opportunities for a variety of projects and roles. You will feel the passion of the growing company.

I agree with him. I think lots of young people, that are fresh out of college, want to work for those big name companies, even with lower pay. But from my experience, I’ve learned so much from working at Gensuite. I’ve worked in operations, marketing and now leading technology projects. In any other company, I wouldn’t have the chance to do what I do. My job wouldn’t be as challenging. The teams I work with are very passionate and closely bounded. It makes me feel energetic, and that each day is promising.

 

After interviewing Alexis and Jenny, I now have a greater insight into how teams work together to accomplish Gensuite’s mission and vision for the future.
